   Saint, Pope and Order Founder.
   Celestine’s baptismal name was Peter. At a young age he joined the Benedictine Order, but left to become a hermit on Mount Morrone in the Abruzzi, Italy. Many were attracted to his ascetic way of life and his rule led to the foundation of the powerful Celestine Order. Because of his sanctity, and in an attempt to reform the Papacy, he was elected Pope in 1294. By this stage he was an old man and his Pontificate was not a success. He was a complete innocent when it came to papal politics and he quickly came under the dominance of King Charles II of Naples. All was confusion and he abdicated of his own free will in the December of 1294. He was subsequently imprisoned by his intensely worldly successor Boniface VIII, and he died while in captivity. He was canonised by Pope Clement v, partly as a public condemnation of Boniface’s policies.
